At least 13 people perish and 98 hurt in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship government projects.

The crash took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.

The president announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Key Undertaking of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose term concluded the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his government's economic vision for the southern region.

Another massive train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its role in national infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated pace, surpassing forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked ongoing questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party called for an prompt pause in the development and management of all similar projects.

This pause was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."

In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in complete accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these vital initiatives.
